Weather at Bergamo, 1:50 PM local time: Partly cloudy, 20C (68F), 10% chance of rain. Winds light and variable, from the south-southeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph).
The Race: An early break of about ten riders gained a lead of more than eight minutes, but the long race and high speeds doomed the move.
It was on the penultimate climb, the Berbenno, that the action became red hot. Ben Hermans and Pieter Weening were a few seconds clear as they crested the hill with a small group chasing hard. The pair were brought back and as the race made the ascent to the finish at Bergamo Alto, Tim Wellens jumped clear. Philppe Gilbert went after him with a vengeance. Wellens was caught as Samuel Sanchez led the group of nine on the descent to the line.
Then Bam! With about a kilometer to go Dan Martin came from the back of the group with a powerful attack. The others had that fatal moment of hesitation before mounting a chase. That was it. The race was over and it belonged to Dan Martin who brilliantly read the other riders' willingness to work during the final seconds.
This is Martin's second monument win, having won Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2013.
